Here’s a new voice on the scene. Well, let me put it like this: Raashan Ahmad is new to me. He’s an emcee who’s been putting out albums since 2008. What I like about him is that 1) his lyrics are thoughtful, and 2) his music makes me think of that 90s Giant Step/Acid Jazz era, with a healthy dash of Native Tongues. You can immediately hear his appeal: The Trenton, New Jersey native’s music feels like summer.
Ahmad is in town tonight as part of the Paris-New York Festival, celebrating Bastille Day in New York.
The first track is “That Feeling ft. Slimkid3 (Phoniks Remix)” from the recent release Above The Clouds by Phoniks & Raashan Ahmad. And here’s an older track–one of many–that I like, too: “Beautiful/Ugly”:
