This Sunday marks the 3rd year that artist and entrepreneur Nucomme Davis-Walker has staged her tribute to jazz funk fusion innovator Betty Davis, who will celebrate a birthday on Thursday, July 26. This homage utilizes music, narration, recordings, dance and photos to tell Betty’s story, and has been performed at venues such as the Schomburg Library and the Apollo Music Cafe. Nucomme wrote this about Betty Mabry Davis: “Raunchy, raw, outrageous, Betty was decades ahead of her time in the early ‘70s, when she released three critically acclaimed albums steeped in sexual energy and in your face takes on love, power, and gender roles.” Indeed.
