Meet left-of-soul singer-songwriter Candice Anitra, who hails from Philly but now calls Brooklyn her home. I’m looking forward to giving her album a close listen. That said, based on a first pass, there’s something going on here. By that, I mean that it sonically confounds any preconceived assumptions that I had about the kind of music I’d hear, i.e., I thought I’d be hearing some warmed-over, same ol’ whatever passes for soul music these days. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case. For now, what I can say is that I find her arrangements refreshing and that’s a pleasant surprise.
