LISTENING POST: Honeychild Coleman — “Echelon” (Pariah soundtrack)

 

If you have heard about it, please look out for filmmaker Dee Rees’ debut feature Pariah, which will be released by Focus Features in NY and LA at the end of the month and then nationally in January.  Rees has turned in an excellent, small film about a young Brooklynite who quietly but firmly embraces her identity as a lesbian.

One of the cool things about this film is that some of the Bold As Love fam made it into the soundtrack.  It was thrilling to see Tamar-Kali and her band performing “Pearl” in a house party scene, as well as to hear her do a cover of The Gossip’s “Fire With Fire” over the end credits.  Sparlha Swa also gets two songs on the soundtrack.

And Rees included this lo-fi rocker from Honeychild Coleman (above in a photo by Ed Marshall), taken from her latest album Bereket Window.  Check it out:
