New episodes of PBS' "Soul!" now online

Just got a heads up from the folks at Thirteen that three new episodes of of the "Soul!" series are now available and streaming online.

Featured in the three new episodes:

  • Blues musician Taj Mahal performs abstract folksongs from the soundtrack to the movie Sounder, one of Mahal's most adventurous recordings.
  • Actor Ron O'Neal talks about the making of the classic blaxploitation film Superfly, and the controversy about its representations of blacks and cocaine.
  • The funk/soul collective New Birth, Inc. perform tight, edgy live versions of their material; songs that have since been sampled heavily by Wu-Tang, Public Enemy, Lil' Wayne and more.
  • Recently deceased jazz saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman, an original member of Ray Charles’ band, puts on a stunning performance with the funk group, Black Heat.
