Almond Joy:

Culture is an ever-changing medium. It provides context for everything that we see and understand. The fact that the President of the United States is African American does shift the context for how African Americans are seen. After all, a glass ceiling has been shattered. Of that, I'm sure. And I do believe there has been some sort of shift, subtle though it may be. As I ask in the post: "What exactly changed? More importantly, to what degree?" I don't have an answer to this. However, what's important is to position Black rock so that it remains vital to not only Black culture, but to American culture.

obama's election doesn't change the "blackness" of anything in america. he isn't just president of black people, you know.
I am certainly excited about what an Obama presidency will bring to our beleaguered nation. He is very articulate to be sure, and seemingly has the intellect and composure to be successful in the highest office of the most powerful nation on earth. However, I am a little skeptical about his level of experience, alleged ties to unsavory organizations and religious affiliations. I voted for him, primarily because of bitterness at the incompetence of the Bush administration. I remain disenfranchised with America so far in the 21st Century, and came across a political graphic that does a fairly good job in capturing this sentiment.

Thanks for the link! I wasn't aware that there was such a focus on that segment of the population born between 1961 and 1965. I'm sure they are part of those "slightly older" that comprise an important part of Generation O. After all, here was a presidential candidate that was closer to them in age and, by extension, shared similar outlooks on life.

Interesting post and blog. Relevantly, many prominent experts and publications have pointed out that Obama is part of Generation Jones, born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and GenXers.
This link takes you to a page you may find interesting: it has, among other things, excerpts from publications like Newsweek and the New York Times, and videos with over 25 top pundits, all talking specifically about Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser:
