Weekend Preview: Pan-African James Brown tribute; Loud Lovin' + more!

Choices, choices, choices this weekend, particularly the one you’re going to have to make tomorrow.  Sorry, that’s the way it goes in NYC.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 21

Still Black, Still Proud: An African Tribute to James Brown (New York debut)

Vieux Jamesbrownjpg

Yes, this sounds like fire, right?

Musical direction by Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley, "cornerstones of Brown’s legendary band on saxophone and trombone, respectively".  Ellis and Wesley have put together a "pan-continental supergroup which features special guests Vieux Farka Touré, the rising Malian star and son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure, and the spiritual and enigmatic Senegalese vocalist Cheikh Lô", all in tribute to the Godfather of Soul.

Hey Rob, this show is gonna be so hot I was going to fly up to check it out (and the rest of Lincoln Center’s final weekend…and the Fela! dance performance). Unfortunately Tropical Storm Fay won’t leave N. Florida quickly enough so I’m staying down south with the family. Damn!

    hey Rob,

you’re right…the JB Tribute show was muy, muy funky. did you get to check it out?

i took some pics and vids (though my camera offers less than stellar results under dark conditions). you can check ‘em here, http://eperl.myphotoalbum.com and here, http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=extplay if you’re interested…

    peace,
    e.
